“So there was a new equilibrium?”

Luke: ‘Equilibrium’? Are you even listening?!

Josh: I suppose you could say that, though equilibrium’s always been over-rated in my opinion. Where’s the fun in that? Was Anne a different person; is that your question? I suppose so. I saw a little more of her of course; after all she had a reason to come to town now, not that she stayed with me any more. It was probably two or three weeks after their Staithes weekend that I saw her next, and they were definitely ‘an item’, she and Luke. It was proof enough, how they behaved together, as if proof were needed. He seemed little changed on the surface and it was only when she was around him that you could see anything resembling a transformation - and even then it was a modest one. But there were evenings of laughter and camaraderie, and on balance I have to admit that I was pleased for her.

There was no talk of plans, not for a long while, though there shouldn’t have been any surprise in the fact they took their time; Anne jokingly called it “wearing each other in”. It was their modus operandi, both of them. Cautious, considerate, not wanting to make any move that would be unduly risky or precipitous. Months passed before I had the first inkling that one of them might move so that they could live together. I had assumed it would be Luke, to be honest. He was so in thrall that she could have asked him to do anything - or at least that was my impression. And there was nothing special about his job, where we worked; I didn’t feel he would be missing anything by just getting up and walking away. When I challenged her later, Anne said she had been in a similar position, though I’m not sure I entirely bought that. She said she wanted a change, was bored with what she was doing, so why shouldn’t she be the one to move? She also enjoyed the major advantage that the firm she worked for had offices where we lived and so it was just a matter of asking for a transfer. It sounded easier than I suspect it actually was, but the logic was faultless. I always wondered if Luke put his foot down; if he did, then that was rare enough. Maybe the tie-breaker was that he liked change less than she did.

Stella: Equilibrium? I guess you could say that, though I’m not the person to ask, am I, given I didn’t really know them at the time nor what they were moving from and to. And, to be frank, I didn’t really care. Matt seemed disinterested too. There had been a short period where he had been intrigued more than anything else, but when events conspired to keep us apart - as a foursome, I mean - well… It wasn’t as if he was suffering or losing out personally because his brother suddenly had himself a serious girlfriend.
